There are already two conceptual garden renovation projects
Excavations of the archaeological remains, which are known to be hidden in the area of the Rila Hotel and the garden in front of it, will begin next year. There is evidence that there is a large building representative of the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great.
The excavations will be financed by the Municipality of Sofia, and it is already known that a team of archaeologists will work there, who for several years have been discovering the treasures of ancient Serdika under St. Domingo. This fall, the team led by Dr. Vessela Katsarova from the National Archaeological Institute with a museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and archaeologists from the Museum of Regional History in Sofia will continue excavations.
“There is an SOS decision for archeology research under the garden in front of Rila.
Is known
what’s up
There is
great
building
It is almost certainly a residence. Perhaps this is the most representative building, probably bigger than the one next to the “St. Georgi” roundabout, explained the Deputy Mayor for Culture and Education of Sofia, Prof. Todor Chobanov.
According to some, it is possible that the palace of Emperor Constantine the Great, who called Serdica “my Rome”, is hidden under the garden.
However, Adjunct Professor Chobanov clarified that it is a residence rather than a palace, as the palace is supposed to be a place from which one administers and lives, and the residence is a place where only the ruler lives.
The biggest intrigue is how well the remains of this building will be preserved, said Adjunct Professor Chobanov, who is also an archaeologist.
Once the research begins, it will be decided how to renovate the garden. Currently, two conceptual options have been developed. Provide in the garden
have water
mirror,
geoplastics,
imitating
mountainous terrain,
a reference to
the mountain
Rila,
playground and rosary. The archeology expected to be discovered there will also be included in the garden’s new vision. It depends on when and how it will be renewed, said Associate Prof. Chobanov.
Late antiquity
the mausoleum becomes the new
attraction of the capital
The late ancient mausoleum, located near the South Park, will become one of the new tourist attractions in Sofia.
It will be restored and restored within the framework of a project with Nis, in which the Municipality of Sofia participates as the main partner. It is funded by the CBC Interreg – IPA Bulgaria – Serbia program of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.
Excavations of the site were carried out in 2001 under the direction of archaeologists from the Sofia Regional History Museum. The mausoleum with three stone sarcophagi dates from the period between the last quarter of the third century and the third quarter of the fourth century. It is believed that members of a noble family from Serdica were buried there, since during the excavations coins, ceramics, a gold belt point and glass were found. Currently, the mausoleum is not accessible to visitors.
In addition to the activities of conservation and restoration of the archaeological remains and sarcophagi, the project includes the partial coverage of the mausoleum, the construction of an information center, a new network of alleys for visitor access, lighting, recreation areas, park playground, landscaping, parking and fencing.
“We already have an artist selected. We hope that in the coming months the activities can start,” explained Sofia’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and Education, Assistant Professor Todor Chobanov.
