Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Varos, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, in Ankara alone, on the anniversary of his unilateral and illegal declaration on the Turkish part of the divided island, is an unprecedented provocation.
This is stated in a statement from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cited by ANA, BNR reported. The ministry said it was in direct violation of UN Security Council resolutions 550 and 789 and European Council decisions, and proof of Turkey’s persistent and growing violation of international law in the eastern Mediterranean.
“We condemn this in the strongest terms and hope that it will be discussed in detail at the next European Council in December,” the ministry said. The solution in Cyprus must be agreed on the basis of two countries with sovereign equality. This was stated by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his speech during the official ceremony celebrating the 37th anniversary of the illegal declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Ankara.
A priority for Turkey is a just and lasting solution in Cyprus that guarantees the legal rights and safety of Turkish Cypriots, ignored for years, President Erdogan said. It must be achieved on the basis of sovereign equality, because “today in Cyprus there are two different peoples, two separate states,” he stressed.
