Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that those who teach Turkey freedom of expression are silent when it comes to cases in European countries, Turkish private television CNN-Turk reported, cited by BTA.
Erdogan spoke by videoconference in front of the fourth edition of the TRT World Forum, which this year is dedicated to the issue of international order and the changing dynamics in the post-pandemic world.
According to the president, Turkey’s successes in the international arena and the great change within the country are not really reflected abroad.
“Turkey is being watched not to establish the truth, but to find answers that fit the Orientalist molds in mind,” Erdogan said. He said the process began in particular with the Gezi Park protests in 2013, when Turkey was subjected to “grave injustices and double standards”, including coverage of the protests.
“But when the same things happened later in different parts of Europe, those who taught us about freedom of the press played the role of the three monkeys. They pretended not to see the yellow vests in central Paris for weeks. They did not mention the disproportionate intervention of the French police, which blinded the protesters, ”he said.
The Turkish president also said that some media outlets were “waving the flag of hostility to Islam and xenophobia”, which he said was “shameful” and poisoned the will for people of different religions and cultures to live together.
