The guitarist and founder of the rock band Van Halen – Eddie van Halen, died today of cancer. This was announced by his son Wolfgang on Twitter. Van Halen was 65 years old.

Eddie, whose full name was Edward Lodewijk van Halen, and his brother Alex were the backbone of the band, which included vocalists like David Lee Roth and Sammy Hager. The Van Halen brothers participated in all of their 12 studio albums, recorded over 40 years.

His inimitable playing style has influenced an entire generation of guitarists, although Eddie himself has never learned to read notes. Instead, he mimicked what he heard.

I don’t want to be the fastest guitarist in town, ready to shoot the competition. All I know is that playing a rock and roll guitar, just like playing blues, has to have melody, speed and taste, and most importantly, emotion. I want people to experience something while listening to me: to be happy, sad, even overwhelmed.

They were both born in the Netherlands, but their family moved to the United States when they were still children. Van Halen’s first self-titled album became one of the most successful records in history, and the band remains one of the most successful in the United States to date.
