There are reports of collapsed buildings in Izmir / southwestern Turkey / after the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6, which was registered at 14.51 local time / 13.51 – Bulgarian / today in the Aegean Sea near IzmirMilliyet reported. There are destroyed buildings in Bayrakli municipality and rescue operations have started there.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu has indicated that there are currently reports of six destroyed buildings in Bornova and Bayrakli municipalities, BTA reported.

He added that the earthquake caused small cracks in buildings in the cities of Usak, Denizli, Manisa, Balakesir, Aydin and Mugla. The minister said there was no information on victims.

The earthquake affected the Turkish Aegean and Marmara regions.

The Turkish Disaster Management Agency said the earthquake struck at a depth of 16.54 kilometers on the Greek island of Samos, the Hurriyet newspaper reported.

Residents of Samos, which has a population of about 45,000, have been urged to stay away from coastal areas, Sky Eftihmios Lekas, head of Greece’s Anti-Seismic Planning Organization, told Greek television.

Strong tidal wave warnings have been issued to the island of Samos.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that the state is supporting citizens affected by the earthquake with all its might, Milliyet reported. He pointed out that actions have been carried out with the relevant institutions and ministers to initiate the necessary work in the region.

The Milliyet newspaper said that after the earthquake, Izmir residents panicked over a possible tsunami. After the earthquake, the sea receded and in some places it flooded residential areas. The streets of the city of Seferihisar were flooded after the earthquake and the water level reached almost one meter, the newspaper said.
