At exactly 8 a.m. on March 15 in New York, psychiatry professor Dr. Ilian Ivanov received a message from which he understood that the film Feeling Through (“Deep feeling” – ba), of which he and his wife Dana Prodanova are co-producers, was nominated for an Oscar. The news, phrased with the brief but significant Yes !, announced to his friend on the film crew. Although they know the movie has been on the short list since February, the couple are wildly excited. But also absolutely convinced of the success of the film in which

The film tells the story of a midnight encounter between a homeless teenager and a deaf and blind adult man. The writer and director is Doug Roland, the executive producer Marley Matlin, winner of the Oscar and the Golden Globe for the best actress for the film “Children Forgotten by God”.

The two Bulgarian doctors were hired as associate producers in October 2018. They then stated that it is an ambitious and original project that will leave a lasting mark on film history.

“We decided to finance the production after seeing the script: unique, based on personal experience and presenting everyday problems that can have a more universal meaning. By including a blind and deaf actor the most authentic effect is achieved.

it was presented to various audiences, including the Bulgarian festival “Portrait” in November 2020. It was well received everywhere because it carries a universal message, “Dr. Ivanov told” 24 hours “.

She is sincerely happy for the success of her compatriot Maria Bakalova, the first Bulgarian to be nominated for the prestigious Academy Film Awards.

“It is a great success for any young actress, especially if she does not come from Hollywood. I am infinitely happy that for the first time there are two nominations from Bulgaria, from Burgas, in a season of the Oscars”, the 58-year-old teacher, tempted art does not hide his enthusiasm.

On his Facebook profile, he wrote: “Los Angeles is preparing for a Bulgarian invasion!” , and before “24 hours” revealed that

Burgas also trembles in anticipation and now, aside from Maria Bakalova, is keeping her fingers crossed for the two medical producers.

“I know that the people of Burgas have talent and ambition, and I am proud of that. But I never imagined that this year the name of our city will be mentioned alongside the Oscars not one, but two! Then our excitement is doubled.

I wish you success

art lovers. And thank you for the wonderful publicity you do in Burgas and Bulgaria! “Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, who greeted his talented fellow citizens in absentia, did not hold back.

One of the first to congratulate Dr. Ivanov on the nomination were actors Emil Markov, Dilyana Hadjiyankova and Toncho Tokmakchiev, with whom the future teacher was in the same class at the Ivan Vazov School in Burgas.

“Even then, Ilian was interested in biology, he went to the Olympics and won awards,” says his mother Zorka Ivanova. Probably the reason for this is her profession as a pharmacist.

The future doctor then studied at the English secondary school, which at that time was the elite of the city. He graduated in 1982 with a gold medal and took the path of medicine.

Since he was a child, Ilian has had a charisma that sets him apart from the rest, his classmates say. It is versatile: it is successful not only in learning, but also in painting, music and sports. When he was very young, his parents kept taking him to a puppet show or children’s concert, and when Ilian started painting, his father Stoyan, a mining engineer, brought him catalogs of world artists from every business trip to the former Soviet Union. Jazz is his other passion. The citizen of Burgas is one of the founders of the band The Shrinks, in which all the members are his fellow psychiatrists. “We have been playing local clubs in New York for almost 20 years, and once at Carnegie Hall. We are currently in the process of recording an original album,” reveals the professor.

He went to the land of limitless possibilities in 1994 to continue his education. He is grateful to his parents who helped him financially. At that time, Dr. Ivanov was working as an assistant in internal medicine at the Varna Medical University.

Dr. Ivanov is currently a professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine, a medical school at Mount Sinai Healy System. “It’s a conglomerate of hospitals in New York. My commitments include working with patients, training young professionals and doing research,” says the doctor. He tries to see his parents at least once a year.

Dr. Ivanov’s brother is also a doctor and also lives in the United States. However, both have not forgotten their roots and always find time for old friends when they return to Bulgaria, their parents say. For 17 years, they spent several months in the United States to help care for the children. His Bulgarian friends, including musician Teodosi Spasov, many famous actors and artists, are said to often stay at Ilian and Dana’s house.

As an English high school graduate, the teacher is eager to return for his 50th anniversary, which will be officially celebrated on May 14 this year. He hopes that the situation around the coronavirus does not prevent him from traveling to Bulgaria.

He says he and his colleagues have been working continuously since the beginning of the pandemic, and many of the sessions are telepsychiatry. The teacher is deeply concerned about the consequences of the crisis, which he believes will be long-lasting both in children’s education and in people’s mental health and social contacts.
