“The higher number of deaths is not unusual, it is due to the peak of the disease at the moment,” Dr. Maria Georgieva, head of the hematology department at the Ministry of the Interior, told BNR.

“The peculiarity of the coronavirus is that the inflammation does not proceed in the usual way, but affects the small pulmonary vessels in which blood clots form. But thrombosis occurs in all vessels and organs. This is special: liver and kidney function are involved in severe cases of the disease.

The bad news is that the virus has not been well studied, The good news is that in patients we expect to have serious complications, this does not actually happen.

Even in my patients, for whom I am most competent to speak – immunosuppressive patients, transplant patients, patients after chemotherapy, it turns out that they wear it out very easily and without complications.

Which means that the coronavirus remains a great mystery.

When blood cancer patients have a preference for the virus to the bone marrow, but not in all patients, and in some people there is a suppression of hematopoiesis, which, however, is not serious and not life-threatening. There are viruses where this is much more serious, but this is not one of those viruses.

Dr. Georgieva said that most of the patients who survived the disease recovered.

“It is a fact, however, and it has been confirmed that our patients with blood cancer and malignancies are a contingent at higher risk, but many of them have also recovered. Associated diseases are also important, also if they have diabetes, if they are overweight, the virus has a preference for men. These patients must strictly follow the measures.

However, not everything about this virus has been studied, so we must monitor our diseases, wear masks, and patients must follow all measures.

Dr. Georgieva asks us to start from the fact that we protect ourselves first.
