IN Bulgarian society is divided on the official statistics on the coronavirus epidemic. This shows a study from Vesti.bg.
Since the discovery in China earlier this year of the new coronavirus that causes covid-19 disease, both have been the subject of suspicion and numerous conspiracy theories.
Much of the mistrust stems from the unprecedented way in which the global media covers the development of the infection.
There is hardly another disease that has received so much media attention and so much information about it has been published in such a short time.
Again a jump in coronavirus infections, the number of hospital admissions is growing
Scientists and doctors are still investigating and learning more and more facts about the coronavirus almost daily. And all this is happening in front of the eyes of society. Even experts cannot always navigate this huge flow of specialized, often raw information left to ordinary people.
And sometimes the new things we learn about kovid-19 contradict what we already know, further fueling conspiracy theories.
But despite widespread speculation in the social space, most people trust scientists and statistics, simply because the latter are the only reliable and verifiable source of information. In this respect, Bulgaria hardly differs significantly from the rest of the world.
45.11% of Bulgarians believe that the officially exported data for covid-19 reflects the real situation.
How deadly is kovid-19 in Bulgaria
However, it is significant that almost the same number, 44.82%, experience some kind of mistrust and believe that the information about the epidemic of coronavirus infection in Bulgaria is exaggerated.
The proportion of people who completely deny the existence of covid-19 is much lower. According to 10.07%, there is no epidemic and the coronavirus is a conspiracy.
The data comes from a non-representative national survey, conducted in the form of an online survey among 20,538 unique Vesti.bg users, in the period 16.10.2020 – 15.11.2020.
