Nitto ATP Finals, Semifinals

Dominic Thiem – Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (5)

Dominic Thiem found a place in the final clash of this year’s ATP Finals after a dramatic victory over Novak Djokovic, considered the main favorite for the title. Absolutely as expected, the two showed incredible tennis, and the Serbian showed his proverbial mental toughness, saving a total of five match points during the match.

However, Team continued to put pressure on world №1 and finally recorded a very difficult but well deserved victory. The US Open champion also performed an incredible feat, falling behind 0-4 in the final tiebreaker, but reached a turning point that will be long remembered.

Thus, in tomorrow’s final Dominator will face the winner of the match between Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev.

The team was much more aggressive on serve, scoring 12 aces to Djokovic’s 5, but also committed five double faults until the Serb did not commit any. The Austrian scored the only breaking point in the match, posting a 50% success rate on this indicator (1 of 2), while Djokovic missed any of the three opportunities that were opened to him.

The team’s aggression is most evident through its enormous superiority in terms of winners: 47 for him against a much more modest 19 for Djokovic. However, this approach turned out to be a double-edged sword, as world №3 made many more unprovoked errors (35-25).

Djokovic won the first game of the match, but Team immediately restored the tie. The Serbian managed to take the lead three more times in the games, but the team did not allow him to make a breakthrough and invariably managed to even the score. Djokovic led again at 5-4, but immediately afterwards the Austrian struck the decisive blow in the set.

The US Open champion tied the games again, then reached the first breakthrough in the match and took a 6-5 lead. Djokovic tried to rise to the challenge, but Team had already picked up a great pace and convincingly won the final twelfth match of the set, realizing his first set point.

The second set played out in exactly the same way: Djokovic took the lead, but the team did not allow the 5-time tournament champion to gain an advantage. Over the course of the set, they both missed an opportunity to break in, and in the twelfth game Djokovic hit two consecutive setballs, which, however, were reflected by his opponent and thus reached a tiebreaker.

The team led 2-0 after an early break, but then Djokovic “stepped on the gas” and scored four unanswered points. However, the Austrian regained his good rhythm and won four of the next five playoffs, reaching a match point at 6-5. However, Djokovic avoided danger, then saved another point to win the match and reached the set point at 8-7.

However, the world No. 3 tried again and reached two more match points, but Djokovic showed iron nerves and stayed in the match. The Serbian continued fighting for each ball and deservedly reached a new set point, which this time was achieved and thus Djokovic won the heart attack tiebreak with 12-10.

The final set started with a zero game for the team, but Djokovic restored the tie after a strong third game. The Austrian managed to take the lead on two more occasions, but the Joker did not allow him to break in the result, and in the meantime he also recorded a scoreless game on his account, with which he tied 3-3. The game continued to develop game by game, and in this set there were no advances, so a new tiebreaker was reached.

It got off to a perfect start for Djokovic, who led convincingly 4-0 and it seemed his victory was a matter of time. However, the team played some of its strongest minutes since the start of the tournament and made an incredible change, reaching two straight match points at 6-4. Djokovic reflected the first, but in his second attempt the team was not wrong and for the second consecutive year will play the final of the tournament.
