Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego presented the great surprise of the Vienna tournament, eliminating world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. The 25-year-old from Turin beat the Serbian 6: 2, 6: 1 in just 70 minutes.
The victory is Sonega’s biggest in his short career. In addition, the Italian qualifies for the first time in the semifinals of an ATP 500 tournament. There he will be able to face Grigor Dimitrov if the Bulgarian beats Daniel Evans.
In the match, Sonego saved all six break points he gave to Djokovic. For his part, the Serbian was transferred five times. He played poorly, and especially in the second set his behavior was strange, showing a lack of desire to continue on the court.
Success is even more valuable to Sonega, as the Italian entered the tournament’s main draw as a happy underdog of the playoffs.
