NATO and the European Commission announced today that they are reviewing their information systems after the major cyberattack against US government agencies, for which the US blames Russia. “At this time, we have not found any evidence that the security of any NATO network has been compromised,” said a spokesman for the Alliance, who wished to remain anonymous. He added that “our experts continue to assess the situation to identify and reduce any potential risk to our networks.”
The American company Microsoft announced this Thursday that it has notified more than 40 of its customers affected by the software used by hackers. Most of them are in the United States.
Hackers have managed to “break” the Orion platform of the US company Solar Winds (SolarWinds), used to manage the information networks of large companies and administrations. The quoted NATO representative noted that the Alliance uses Orion in some of its information systems. “NATO also has a rapid (cyberspace) intervention team that can be mobilized at any time, and our cyberspace operations center is functioning normally,” he said.
The European Commission assured AFP that the Solar Winds software used in its systems “was not affected by the incident.” The EC services are still “analyzing the situation”.
