The great Swiss from Basel will rival CSKA in the playoffs to enter the Europa League groups. This became a fact after Basel achieved a painful 3: 2 victory as host of the Cypriot Anorthosis.
The start of the match by no means involved a level playing field, as the Swiss team had a classic lead in the first 21 minutes. Silvan Widmer and Samuele Campo scored goals, and Hovhannes Hambartsumyan scored an own goal for 3: 0.
At the end of time, however, a ray of hope appeared for the guests, after Branko Vargoch reduced from a penalty by 3: 1. At the beginning of the second half, however, it seemed clear again, after Tornike Okriashvili received a second yellow and red card, respectively.
Still, the drama was yet to come. In the 67th minute, Giorgi Quilitaia surprisingly cut the lead to 2: 3 to stretch the hosts’ nerves to the limit. Two minutes before the end of regulation time, Julian Vonmoos left Basel with 10 men in the final minutes.
However, no new goals were scored in the tense final seconds and the Swiss giants will therefore play with CSKA as host to determine one of the participants in the Europa League group stage.
