Thus, the first Japanese designer to gain popularity on the highly competitive fashion scene in Paris died at the American Hospital in Paris, a spokesman said.

The designer was 81 years old.

His death came 50 years after he launched his first collection in Paris.

He retired from fashion in 1999, six years after selling his eponymous fashion brand to luxury conglomerate LVMH, and devoted his time to one-of-a-kind projects, including a designer collection earlier this year.

Takada came to France from his native Japan in 1965, arriving first in Marseille before heading to Paris.

He planned only a short stay in the French capital, but Paris eventually became his home.

Who is Kenzo Takada?

He was born on February 27, 1939 in the city of Himeji (Hyogo prefecture, Japan) in the family of the owner of a tea house.

When he was a teenager, he decided to spend most of his time designing clothing.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Kenzo Takada studied at the Tokyo College of Fashion Design. He is one of the first male students in the history of this educational institution.

In 1965 he moved to Paris. She initially made money by selling her sketches to fashion houses.

In 1970, she opened a women’s clothing store under her own Jungle Jap brand at the Vivienne Gallery in Paris. In his early collections, the designer actively used unusual floral patterns inspired by the aesthetic of the jungle. Kenzo Takada was first spotted by haute couture experts in 1970, when fashion magazine Elle featured a photo of a girl in a dress designed by him on its cover. A year later, his collections were exhibited in Tokyo and New York, making him world famous.
