“I think politicization is extremely high and polarization is unbearable. This is one of the reasons why the situation in Bulgaria is so toxic,” famous Bulgarian director, animator and graphic designer Teodor Ushev told BGNES.

According to the artist, whose animated short “Blind Vaisha” (based on the story of the same name by Georgi Gospodinov) received an Oscar nomination in 2017, people have already become extremely intolerant. He is also puzzled that art and culture people do not speak out on the issue of public discontent, which has been filling the squares of Sofia and the country’s big cities for months.

“Everyone knows the reason why he is silent. It is very difficult when you say something, thousands of people immediately attack you for not agreeing. I do not want to impose thoughts on anyone or suggest anything,” he said.

“I have no problem talking to anyone, from any political spectrum. Not to mention artists. For me, everyone is first and foremost an artist, and then everything else. I don’t divide anyone into which party or movement he sympathizes, “said Teodor Ushev.

But he wonders why our country ended up so divided. “I have a theory that things are not only in the last 10 years. It has been a long time since certain processes were carried out. At one point, everyone came together and focused on something like instant coffee – all trends Concentrated negatives and positive things have disappeared, ”said the artist.

For him, the most disturbing truth is that we seem to have forgotten to be good.

“It has already become a model that COVID-19 was a litmus test of the negative things that have happened, but I think it is really true. Not only here in Bulgaria. It is just that the history of this virus has brought out the surface the most rotten and the most disgusting traits of human character, as well as human ethnopsychology, both in America and in France, everywhere, instead of getting better, we have become more angry and hate ourselves, everything is connected, there is no one reason for things, which is a very long conversation, “said Teodor Ushev.

According to him, society must go through a kind of catharsis to end this process of division, and everything will end in a positive way, although at this point it seems impossible for people to just clap and hug.
