Slovakia’s testing and quarantine program over the past two weekends has helped cut the incidence of the new coronavirus by more than half, Prime Minister Igor Matovic said today, according to Reuters.

In early November, Slovakia, with a population of 5.5 million, tested 3.6 million people, excluding young children and some older people. People who tested positive had to be quarantined. More than 2 million people were tested this weekend. The tests were carried out only in the worst affected areas and the level of infection turned out to be much lower thanks to the quarantine orders issued earlier.

Taking into account the areas where the tests were conducted over the two weekends, the infection level dropped from 1.47 percent in the first weekend to 0.62 percent of those tested in the second, Matovic said. at a press conference.

“We are heading into a severe winter,” Matovic said. “We have an extremely effective tool with antigen testing that reduces the proportion of infected people by 58 percent,” he said.

The tests were free and voluntary, but the government imposed quarantine, including a travel ban, on people who refused to take the test.

Individuals should bring certificates that they have been tested and that their samples have been negative.
The program used antigenic tests that showed results in up to 15-30 minutes, but they were not as accurate as standard AKP laboratory tests.
