The World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned about the level of transmission of the coronavirus in Europe, said the director of its European subsidiary Hans Kluge, quoted by AFP. He added that the organization also fears the reduction of the expected quarantine in several countries.

“The September figures should be of concern to all of us” in Europe, where the number of new cases already exceeds that of March and April, Kluge said.

In addition, the WHO ruled out the possibility of shortening its recommendation of a 14-day quarantine for anyone who has been in contact with the virus. “Our recommendation for a 14-day quarantine is based on our understanding of the incubation period and transmission of the disease, we will change it only if our understanding of the science changes, which has not happened so far,” said Catherine Smallwood, manager. of emergencies. the European branch of the WHO, reports BTA.

In France, the duration of the contact quarantine was reduced to 7 days, in the UK and Ireland the quarantine is 10 days. Several European countries, such as Portugal and Croatia, are considering reducing it.

Given the enormous impact that even a minimal reduction in quarantine can have on people and society, “I urge the countries of the region to follow a regular scientific procedure with their experts and explore safe options to reduce the quarantine period”, Kluge said.

Nearly five million confirmed cases and more than 227,000 victims of the virus have been reported to WHO Europe, which includes 53 countries, including Russia, according to the organization.

Due to the return of the epidemic, as well as the greater testing capacity than in March and April, the number of cases of contagion registered is currently about 40-50 thousand, compared to the daily peak of 43,000 registered on April 1. The new record was set on September 11 with 54,000 cases in 24 hours.
