Customs officials seized cocaine worth more than BGN 5 million at the Malko Tarnovo border checkpoint. It was hidden in the hideout of a car traveling from Bulgaria to Turkey.

A man and a woman who were transporting the drugs were detained for 72 hours. The prosecution is about to request his arrest.
On Saturday morning, around 6.30am at the Malko Tarnovo border checkpoint, according to the risk analysis method, customs officials stopped a car traveling to Turkey.
“In the trunk, 17 packages with a total weight of 18 kilograms 221 grams of cocaine were found in a cache,” said Vasil Indjov, deputy director of TD South Maritime-Customs Agency.
“At free market prices, it amounts to more than BGN 5 million,” said district attorney Georgi Chinev.
A 40-year-old woman from Burgas and a 51-year-old man from Varna were in the car. They were detained for a period of 72 hours, their houses were searched. Articles related to the crime were found.
“3,000 Swiss francs and about 10,000 euros were found and seized,” said supervising prosecutor Manuer Manev.
The detainees were charged with two counts: possession and distribution of drugs and attempted smuggling.
“The second accusation, the attempted smuggling, is more severe, and the penalty there is imprisonment for 15 to 20 years and a fine of 200 to 300 thousand levs,” Manev added.
Experts have yet to determine the purity of the cocaine found, as well as the route of the drug.
