There is no chance that he survived. Once he was declared unknown by those around him, there was no chance. We can expect a miracle, but miracles of this kind hardly happen there. This is what climber Doychin Vassilev told Kmeta.bg on the occasion of the latest information that Atanas Skatov has disappeared on the way to the K2 base camp.

“Under these conditions, it must be clear that anything can happen. Also, there was soon a case where other climbers climbed to the top, accompanied by a tragedy, as one of the participants died. I wonder how Skatov decided to take risks “The difficulties are so many. But everyone decides based on their qualifications, their feelings on the mountain, the preparation … there are many factors, “said Vassilev.

According to him, the incident should be clarified first: how it happened, if there are witnesses … possibly his body can be found, he believes.

“The K2 is very heavy and dangerous. The bad thing is that many people underestimate it, overestimate their own abilities and this is the result, ”said the climber.
The top is surrounded by ropes along many routes. On the one Skatov climbed, every year more and more ropes are put on, but for the next climbers they get old. An outage leads to such incidents. There are many cases of this type in history. Jerzy Kukuchka: The great Polish climber died this way, explained Vassilev.

“Trusting in the strength of something unknown, in a rope that you don’t know when it is put, how strong it is, you risk your life,” he said.

If there is a possibility of finding the body of the native mountaineer Vassilev commented that it depends on the terrain, there must be people who are committed to it, to carry out a rescue operation.

“This will not only be a lesson now, but also for future climbers who will follow the same route next year,” he concluded.

According to him, one must be fully prepared physically, mentally and technically to start climbing K2. And good luck. “So many tragedies have happened there that if you think about it, you will draw very serious conclusions. There are cases where 12 to 13 people have died per season,” said Doychin Vassilev.
