The Chinese company Sinopharm announced today that one of its COVID-19 vaccines is effective in 79 percent of cases, AFP reported.
The agency notes that this percentage is lower than its US competitors Pfizer and Moderna.
Sinopharm is the first Chinese company to provide such statistics. It announced today that its vaccine is effective in 79.43 percent of cases, BTA reported.
For comparison, Pfizer claims to be 95 percent efficient and Modern 94.1 percent.
The British company Astra Zeneca announced that the vaccine, which it developed together with the University of Oxford, was 70 percent effective. However, the effectiveness can be as high as 100 percent with two doses, AFP recalls.
China, where the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 appeared late last year, has invested heavily in vaccine development that promised to do a “global public good.” The country, which has effectively controlled the epidemic in its territory, has been forced to conduct clinical trials in other countries, where the virus continues to spread rapidly, AFP notes.
Five Chinese vaccines are in the third phase of clinical trials.
Sinopharm did not specify whether these tests were completed with the first vaccine. However, the company said it had requested approval from the Chinese authorities.
