The specialized prosecution prosecuted five people, including two workers from the Arsenal arms factory in Kazanlak, for participating in a criminal group organized for the production, possession and distribution of firearms in the Stara Zagora region.

They were arrested on November 6, 2020 during a specialized police operation by agents of the BOP Sector – Stara Zagora under the direction of the specialized prosecutor’s office.

During searches of addresses, cars and offices at the Arsenal factory, used by the two defendants, firearms suitable for shooting, incl. 7.62mm semi-automatic rifles with silencers and optical instruments, made with parts for SLR-Arsenal hunting rifles, Makarov pistols with silencers, etc.

In the apartment of one of the defendants in the village of Cherganovo, Stara Zagora district, a workshop was opened, equipped with metal-working machines and equipment for the precise processing of details. In the room a large number of barrels and parts for long-barreled weapons and pistols, optical instruments, lamps for silencers, a large quantity of ammunition of various calibers were found and seized. In a bungalow in the village of Gorno Chernovishte, a 9mm pistol was found with the barrel removed, used by another participant in the group, in the process of alteration.

According to the evidence gathered so far, the group has been operating since January 2020. It is established if and how the two workers at the arms factory illegally exported parts that were later assembled or used in rifles and pistols. Some of the barrels and butts of the weapons found show Arsenal inscriptions and serial numbers.

The group offered the finished products to customers in the region. The price of a long-barreled weapon equipped with a silencer ranged from around BGN 2,500. For BGN 1,700, the group offered a Makarov with a silencer, two refills and 30 rounds.

By order of the supervising prosecutor, four of the accused were detained for up to 72 hours. On November 9, 2020, the Special Prosecutor’s Office will present to the Specialized Criminal Court a request for preventive detention for each of them. The fifth defendant was released on bail by the supervising prosecutor, according to his health.
