The European Commission will discuss tomorrow the possibility of concluding a contract for the supply of 300 million doses of the vaccine against COVID-19, developed by the US manufacturer Pfizer (Pfizer Inc.). This was announced by the president of the commission, Ursula von der Layen.
This is the most promising vaccine so far, Von der Layen said in a statement after Yesterday’s announcement from the manufacturer that the effectiveness of the new preparation is 90 percent.. So far, the EC has signed contracts with three other manufacturers and more are to come, added the EC president. Once the vaccine is available, we intend to quickly provide it across the EU, he added, cited by BTA.
Earlier today, a spokesman for the commission said no in-depth talks had been held with Pfizer so far.. He noted that the terms of the new treaty have yet to be specified and are expected to be determined tomorrow at the weekly meeting of EU commissioners.
According to him, EU countries are expected to be given a deadline in which to declare whether they are interested in participating in the supply of the vaccine, and then negotiate with the manufacturer the prices and quantities needed. The issue of vaccines is expected to be discussed by the European Parliament on Thursday and MEPs will insist on transparency in the conclusion of agreements with manufacturers.
