Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani led his team to Southampton on matchday 10 of the Premier League. The Uruguayan veteran scored an assist and two goals for the hit. And right after the game, I was in the seventh heaven of happiness. But hours after his famous performance on the field, the 34-year-old forward got in trouble for a post on social media.
Cavani shared an Instagram post from his fan, which contained a photo of the stripper and a text in Spanish that says “I love you, Matadore.” In response, the attacker wrote “Thanks Negrito!”
The latter was immediately perceived as a racist comment. Three hours later, the post was removed. The club explained that Cavani put sentiments of friendship in this direction and the word has completely different connotations in South America. Manchester United have explained to Cavani that in the UK, however, such statements are perceived differently and the forward must be very careful with his vocabulary in this regard.
British media claim that the FA will investigate the case. According to the association’s regulations, acts of discriminatory behavior on social media are punished with a minimum of three match penalties, while offenses on the field are punished with between 6 and 12 matches.
