The driver of the car was arrested. He resisted arrest. The man is a 51-year-old German from the Trier-Saarburg region. The suspect was drunk. According to a prosecutor, the man had “significant amounts” of alcohol in his blood. He also showed signs of mental problems.
There is still no specific data on the motive for the attack: terrorist, political or religious.
“At the moment, we cannot say anything specific about the motivation for the act,” Trier police spokesman Karl-Peter Jochem said.
Mayor Wolfram Laibe told SWR public television that more than 15 people were injured, some seriously.
During a press conference, the mayor clarified: “The driver was driving uncontrollably and at high speed on the street. I come from the city center and the view was horrible. There was a sneaker lying on the pavement and the girl it belonged to was dead, “Laibe added.
Witnesses also said that the driver of the car sped through the pedestrian zone and deliberately struck people. According to them, it seemed crazy.
