“We Bulgarian students in Germany ask you to pay attention to the ongoing weeks of protests in Bulgaria” – this is the beginning of the open letter from current and graduate Bulgarian students in Germany, addressed to Chancellor Angela Merkel and the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
“Here we learned democracy”
In their letter, the students explained that “the countless corruption scandals of recent years, the lack of separation of powers and the censorship of the media are only a small part of the reasons for the general discontent.” “At the same time, corruption in our country affects not only the Bulgarian population, but all European citizens whose taxes are spent through the redistributive mechanisms of the EU on development projects and programs in Bulgaria,” the students wrote Bulgarians and asked the following question: “How would you justify and legitimize the association of the HDZ party with the GERB party, despite the numerous corruption scandals, the lack of freedom of the established media and the lack of separation of powers?” .
Furthermore, in their letter, the Bulgarians who joined the initiative recall that it was as students in Germany that they learned the democratic values, norms and principles underlying the rule of law. “Now we want to bring to our homeland the same principles, expressed in the separation of powers, transparent elections, democratic governance, an independent judiciary and freedom of expression and media.”
Two main demands
Bulgarian students formulate two main demands: “We demand the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Attorney General Ivan Geshev in order to lay the foundations for free and transparent elections and start a real fight against corruption in the country. And second: we demand a judicial reform, in order to restore the separation of powers and limit the uncontrolled exercise of power by the Attorney General “.
The open letter from Bulgarian students in Germany ends with the following appeal: “We urge you to reconsider your support for the GERB party led by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.” So far, the open letter has been signed by more than 70 Bulgarian students in Germany.
