At 12 noon today, Bulgaria resumes flights from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, which were suspended due to the new strain of COVID-19. Passengers arriving from the UK will be screened with antigen tests and placed in a 10-day quarantine. As of January 1, a negative PCR test will be required 72 hours before the arrival of travelers to our country.

This was decided at a working meeting with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, which was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, Health Minister Kostadin Angelov and Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rosen Zhelyazkov.

European Commission with recommendations for travel and transport to the UK

Prime Minister Borissov ordered the responsible ministers to issue the necessary orders so that all Bulgarian citizens can return to their homeland today. “In this case, the price is irrelevant considering the tension, fear and waiting at the borders of our compatriots. So the job, including the government Airbus, is available, ready to fly if needed, as it was during the first wave of the coronavirus, “Prime Minister Borissov said.

During the working meeting, Health Minister Kostadin Angelov reported that ensuring the safety of all Bulgarian citizens in the face of the new strain in Great Britain is in line with yesterday’s EU recommendations. In this context, the performance of an antigen test is introduced upon the arrival of the United Kingdom to the territory of Bulgaria, which has the same weight as the PCR test.

BULGARIANS IN A TRAP NEAR DOVER: Are there more of our compatriots in need?

And after the New Year, we introduce the requirement of submitting a PCR test, just like the EU recommendations. The PCR test should be carried out 72 hours before arrival on the Bulgarian territory, “said Minister Angelov. To do this, an airport organization is created in Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas and Varna.

“A note from the Civil Aviation Administration will be issued from 12 noon today, resuming flights from the UK and Northern Ireland to the airports of the Republic of Bulgaria – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas.” said the Minister of Transport, Information technologies and communications Rosen Zhelyazkov. He urged not to make insignificant trips, according to the instructions of the EC. Minister Zhelyazkov added that after the transitional period, starting at 00:00 on January 1, 2021, measures against those arriving from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland will be considered.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva said that our embassy in Great Britain provides full assistance to our compatriots and that the situation in the Foreign Ministry monitors the entire operational situation.

WHO: New strain of coronavirus is not “out of control”

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that picking up Bulgarian citizens is extremely difficult due to limited flights from almost 20 European countries. Zaharieva added that after 48 hours the border between France and the UK was closed, it is now open, but requires a PCR or antigen test.

The Deputy Prime Minister also noted that representatives from our embassy have provided assistance to Bulgarian citizens waiting at the border in Dover, providing food and water to those in need there, and have contacted local authorities in an attempt to alleviate the situation. Zaharieva added that many Bulgarians are struggling in Britain.

“There are many Bulgarians who have left their apartments, whose employment contracts have been terminated, as well as students who, due to the complicated situation there, have been asked to leave their bedrooms and who are in a difficult situation and not they have a place to live there. We received hundreds of calls to the emergency telephone, which we opened since March in the situation center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ”said Minister Zaharieva.
