Bulgaria has drinking water for another 2-3 years, said Environment Minister Emil Dimitrov. Currently, together with the entire water supply and sewerage sector, a plan is being drawn up to supply potable water by then.
Western Bulgaria has no problem with water, the efforts of the Ministry of Ecology are focused on eastern Bulgaria. There has been water in Sofia for 3 years and all the dams in the district are full. This was stated in a briefing in Parliament by the Minister of Ecology, Emil Dimitrov.
We need to think about the backup water supply of regional cities, Dimitrov said, noting that in recent months he has held numerous meetings to prepare a report that would give a blank “B” when facing the water crisis, if this year is a drought for the country.
Part of the dams, which are used for irrigation, and the water is good, for drinking and for domestic use, is proposed by the Ministry of Ecology as a way to solve the problem. The Ticha and Yastrebino dams identified Dimitrov as endangered sources of water. Yastrebino is used for irrigation, but it has reached a critical point for farmers and the water it contains is stored for drinking. Should it fill up this year, water will be released again for agriculture. There is water in Ticha where Targovishte and Shumen are supplied for 2 years, but the Minister of Ecology asks to drill in the area and accelerate the completion of the “Danubio” well system started 50 years ago.
The main problem, according to Dimitrov, is the Kamchia dam, which supplies Varna and Burgas. There, the plan is to feed the southern coast of the Black Sea with 2 more dams: Aheloy and Poroy.
Asked by OFFNews if there will be a strategy for water supply after these 2-3 years, Dimitrov said that no one can say what will happen until then, and the cycle of water crises is 10-11 years. He could have kept quiet when he saw in January that some of the dams were being emptied and left the problem to his heir.
