The vote in the European Parliament last Wednesday raised the emission reduction by 60% by 2030.
“We strongly support the fight against climate change, environmental protection, low carbon emissions, but at the same time we want to find a plan with the European Commission for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, where the vast majority of their energy it’s coal. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov before the start of the European Council in Brussels, announced the government information service. Borissov pointed out that our country’s estimates are to reach a ceiling of up to 40% reduction in emissions by 2030. “That was the limit of our strength to do it alone. “My political opponents in Bulgaria are competing to talk about how they want to keep miners, mines and thermal power plants, but in the European Parliament, the Social Democrats, the rightists outside the GERB, the liberals of the MRF and the BSP have voted for 60% ceiling, “he said.
In this context, he discussed with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen the Bulgarian experts working on the issue to send a letter as soon as possible with all the problems that our country will have if it enters a recent closure regime like this.
“I have repeatedly said that I want consolidation, a conversation about the future after 5, 10, 15 years of mines, thermal power plants,” Borissov said. He added that so far, however, he has only received populist responses on how power plants should not be shut down, while in the European Parliament his opponents vote differently.
The vote in question, of which the prime minister speaks, was last Wednesday. The European Parliament then supported the idea of climate neutrality in Member States by 2050 and called for more ambitious emissions targets for 2030 and 2040.
On 7 October, the EP approved by 392 votes in favor, 161 against and 142 abstentions the mandate for negotiations on EU climate legislation. Its aim is to turn the political promise of a climate neutral EU by 2050 into a binding commitment.
The current target is to reduce emissions by 40% to 20% from 1990 levels. The European Commission recently proposed an increase in the reduction target to “at least 55%”. However, MEPs “raised the bar” higher last Wednesday, calling for a reduction of 60% by 2030. They added that national targets should be raised in a cost-effective and fair way.
For 60 percent of the 17 Bulgarian MEPs, nine voted in favor, all five from Socialists and Democrats / BSP (Elena Yoncheva, Petar Vitanov, Ivo Hristov, Tsvetelina Penkova, Sergei Stanishev), all three from Renew Europe ”/ MRF (Atidje Alieva-Veli, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Iskra Mihailova) and Radan Kanev from EPP / GERB.
Only 3 Bulgarians voted against: Angel Djambazki and Andrey Slabakov from EKR / IMRO, as well as Alexander Yordanov from EPP / UDF.
The other 5 members of the PPE / GERB decided that they did not need to vote and abstained: Asim Ademov, Andrey Novakov, Andrey Kovachev, Eva Maidel and Emil Radev.

Borissov welcomed the European Commission, which is working very hard to create a single medical protocol and a unique style of action in the EU in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It is extremely important that the procurement of vaccines from all member states is transparent and fair, that we help the medical systems to maintain themselves, since any closure of economies will already be fatal,” added Borissov.
