“The agenda we have set together for sustainable development until 2030 is particularly important for Bulgaria as a key to tackling inequalities and a way to achieve a prosperous and peaceful society,” Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in his first speech. for the Summit of the Decade of Action on Sustainable Development, held within the framework of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly. This year, the forum and accompanying events are being held completely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In front of world leaders, the Bulgarian Prime Minister stressed that since the adoption of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, member states have made a long-term commitment to achieving them. These include the eradication of poverty, economic development, the reduction of inequalities, quality education, peace and justice.

He stressed that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lag in the implementation of goals, with a worsening of social inequalities, poverty and the serious consequences of climate change that come to the fore.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated that the 2030 Agenda is more important than ever. The announced Decade of Action will also be a Decade of Recovery with a focus on development goals,” said Boyko Borissov. He was adamant that the pandemic had also shown that no country could deal with the consequences alone.

and with the participation of interested parties, “said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. According to him, the participation of the non-governmental sector, business, youth, academia, vulnerable groups and local government is key to achieving the 17 objectives set.
Borissov recalled that this year Bulgaria presented its first voluntary national review of the implementation of the goals. Along with the achievements, some challenges were identified to achieve them.

noted the Bulgarian Prime Minister in his speech at the summit. He also highlighted the need for a reliable implementation of nature protection legislation.
Borissov: time to change
“We plan to build a national mechanism to coordinate the implementation of the UN goals for sustainable development with the participation of the government and a wide range of stakeholders,” Borissov told the government press center.
Addressing the participants in the meeting, the Prime Minister pointed out that the motto of the Bulgarian Parliament “Unity is strength” is fully valid in terms of achieving the objectives of the UN. “Bulgaria is ready to do its part. It is time to act,” added Boyko Borissov.
The summit with the Bulgarian Prime Minister was attended by 23 other heads of state and government from countries such as Austria, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, Argentina, Peru, Lebanon, Morocco, the Republic of South Africa and others.
