Another connection between Bulgaria and Greece will soon be established. This is the long-awaited Rudozem-Xanthi border checkpoint, announced Prime Minister Boyko Borissov
“KGPP project” Rudozem – Xanthi “for BGN 80 million will be ready in February”. This was stated by Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during an inspection of construction activities at the new border checkpoint.
With him are the Minister of Finance, Kiril Ananiev, and the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Nikolay Nankov.
“It is a huge construction. This is a BGN 80 million project. Many wanted to have a checkpoint in the Smolyan region. We gave money. For the first time, taxpayers’ money goes to the northwestern regions of Bulgaria and the Rhodopes.
Traffic in the region will increase and that is why we are working hard for the construction of a third lane on part of the highway between Asenovgrad and Pamporovo. The development of the region will increase the need for water, for which we will build a new reservoir, worth nearly BGN 2 million, Borissov added.
All types of transport are expected to pass through the Rudozem-Xanthi border checkpoint, which will greatly benefit the development of trade, business and good neighborliness in the region. New jobs will be created. The crisis with the coronavirus will pass, people will move again without restrictions, that is why we do not stop building roads and highways, said Prime Minister Borissov.
The construction of the checkpoint and the adjacent infrastructure cost about 40 million euros. The funds come from the project “Improving cross-border accessibility”. At the end of last year, the Council of Ministers provided an additional BGN 18,445,744. Rhodopes are one of the symbols of the Bulgarian. That is why this is a special place for each one of us. This is a region with enormous development potential and I am sure that the new point will demonstrate its key importance to improve connectivity, business and tourism, Borissov said.
