British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to make a statement today. However, part of his speech was distributed by the cabinet. In it, Britain sets the deadline of October 15 to reach a free trade agreement with the European Union (EU). Otherwise, both parties “must accept this and move on.”
Following the country’s exit from the Union on January 31, there is a transition period in which trade continues under the old rules, but ends in December 2020, and little progress has been made in negotiating a new trade agreement.
The main obstacle is Britain’s insistence on full autonomy in matters of state aid and fisheries. Negotiations between the two countries are expected to resume on September 8 in London.
Johnson thinks there is no point in thinking about schedules beyond October 15. “If we cannot agree by then, I do not think there is a free trade agreement between us and we must both accept it and move on,” the British prime minister is expected to say today.
If no agreement is reached, Britain will have trade relations with the EU similar to Australia’s, which would be a “good result. As a government we are preparing, at our borders and in our ports, to be prepared for this. We will have full control over its laws, its rules and its fishing grounds, ”says Johnson.
