Since the start of the hunting season on October 3, in the system of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency / BFSA / for the control and investigation of wild boars for African swine fever / ASF / – Module “Hunting”, 1089 samples of wild boars from three hunting trips. The virus was confirmed in one of the samples tested, the BFSA press center announced.
The BFSA advises that they carry out continuous monitoring regarding the spread of ASF in the country. Supervision is exercised on each shot or dead boar found, and the samples must be taken and entered in the “Hunting” module software application. The BFSA has created and implemented the “Hunting” Module in the work of all laboratories that perform tests for the presence of ASF. Hunters enter sample data into the “Hunting” module electronically via mobile device, rather than on paper.
Each sample is marked with a barcode, by which it is identified upon entering the laboratory. After the test, the result is re-entered into the electronic system, so that the sender can receive information about it through his mobile device. The result can also be consulted on the Food Agency website. The Hunting module is designed to support and facilitate the work of collecting, shipping and analyzing wild boar samples for trichinosis and African swine fever. Using the application also avoids frequent errors due to incorrect or inaccurate information on paper. The introduction of the module facilitates and speeds up the process of transmission and processing of the sample, as well as the return of test results.
Regarding the rearing of domestic pigs, the efforts of the veterinary authorities in the last two years have been aimed at improving the regulatory framework, increasing the scope of veterinary care and control, helping farmers to implement the new measures and inform the public. The BFSA recalls that changes have been made to the AIA and Ordinance 44 on veterinary requirements for livestock farms. In early 2020, a Plan for the control and prevention of the spread of ASF in Bulgaria was developed and implemented. The scope of veterinary control has been improved by providing veterinary services to small settlements and small livestock farms, such as private farms. The BFSA has developed operating procedures and instructions for the application of the new rules, and veterinary inspections are underway to ensure compliance.
Clinical and laboratory supervision in pig farms continues to be carried out on a monthly basis. This includes clinical examinations of the animals by an official doctor, clinical examinations of each batch of pigs before transfer / between sites, to the slaughterhouse, etc./, weekly sampling of dead pigs during rearing and blood samples 7 days before transfer . In personal-type sites, intensive control of registration and settlement, inventory of sites of this type, as well as those with unregulated pig farming, is exercised. The measures developed against ASF are aimed at preventing the spread of the disease. Upon detection of an outbreak of African swine fever in a pig breeding facility, control and eradication measures for African swine fever will be applied, in accordance with the regulations, reports the BFSA.
