Scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences are starting to develop a second version of the Bulgarian coronavirus vaccine and there will be a different antigen cocktail compared to the first. This was stated to the Health Telegraph by the director of the Institute of Microbiology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Penka Petrova.
The idea, which will be financed by the Research Fund, is different from the one that specialists are already working on thanks to the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Scientists from the Department of Immunology, led by Prof. Andrey Chorbanov, will work on the second version of the vaccine.
The prototype of the first preparation, which has been worked for months, will be ready for the new year. “Viral antigens have been selected to act against them. There are different types of vaccines. Those to be bought in Bulgaria are based on RNA information, which provides information to cells about the production of viral proteins, against which to build an immune response. .
Our development skips this stage and, in fact, as a protein vaccine, it acts directly against certain viral proteins, building an immune response and training the immune system to recognize and destroy the virus in time, ”said the Institute of Microbiology.
Animal experimentation will start in 2021, and some of the experiments will be carried out at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. Each of the lab mice to be tested costs around $ 200.
