Banks in Bulgaria already have more than what the state produces in a year. This is shown in the latest BNB data. According to them, the assets of the banking system increased in January by BGN 530 million and reached BGN 124.5 billion.
The last year for which there is reliable data on GDP is 2019 and then it was 118.6 billion lev. By 2020 there will probably be a small decline and GDP will fall to 114 billion lev.
The growth of bank assets shows that despite the crisis caused by the pandemic, loans to companies and individuals remain active, financiers commented. BNB data shows that the banking system’s gross loan portfolio compared to the end of December 2020 increased by BGN 306 million to BGN 69.8 billion. The largest increase was recorded in business: BGN 229 million.
The condition of the banks remains more than stable: their liquidity coverage is 304.6% compared to 279% at the end of December 2020, and the minimum requirement is a level of 100%. At the end of January, the liquidity buffer was BGN 33.5 billion.
Active loans also lead to better results for banks. Its profit at the end of January reached 77 million BGN, 48.5% more than in the same month last year.
There is no relocation of banks in the first group, where the five with the largest assets are located. Unicredit Bulbank remains in first place, followed by DSK Bank, UBB, Postbank and First Investment Bank.
According to BNB data, 115,027 claims were filed with a gross debt of BGN 9,014 million on the loan default.
95,184 have been approved, with a value of 8,284 million BGN. 14,339 applications have been submitted by 6,918 million companies, of which 13,174 for 6,471 million have been approved at the end of January. Households have submitted 100,688 requests for deferral of liabilities. 2,096 million BGN, of which 82,010 were approved for 1,813 billion. Compared to the end of last year, the total number of approved applications from businesses and households increased by 5706, and the gross amount of deferred liabilities increased by BGN 210 million.
