Azerbaijan insists that Armenia must withdraw troops from the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region to end six days of fighting after France, Russia and the United States demanded a ceasefire, AFP reported. .bg.

“If Armenia wants to see an end to this escalation of the situation, the ball is in Armenia’s court,” said Hikmet Hadjiev, foreign affairs adviser to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

“Armenia must end its occupation of Karabakh,” he insisted, adding: “This must end.”

Clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces erupted on Sunday over a long-running territorial dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Almost 200 people, including civilians, have died in the fighting, despite growing international calls for a ceasefire.

In a joint appeal yesterday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron called on the two sides to return to talks aimed at resolving their long-running territorial dispute.

Earlier today, Armenia said it was “ready to compromise” with France, Russia and the United States, which are co-chairs of the OSCE mediation group, “to restore the ceasefire.”

But it is also stressed that negotiations cannot begin unless the fighting is stopped.
