He explained the steps to be taken in the next mass immunization of the population. He also pointed out the goal: more than 60% vaccinated to stop the epidemic.
Adjunct Professor Kunchev admitted that he doubts that Bulgaria is among the “excellent” in terms of immunization, but stressed that the state will do everything in its power to convince the people that this is the only way to defeat the coronavirus.
“I am very hopeful that this fragile trend to reduce incidence will continue, this is only the beginning, and if we succeed, I am IN FAVOR of liberalizing the measures, although not 100%,” said Prof. Asoc. Kunchev. .
He also commented on the hottest topic lately – vaccination:
“The European Commission has launched a procedure to conclude preliminary contracts
with different manufacturers. Initially there were 4, then there were 6, and now there are 7, and it is planned to apply such a number of vaccines to cover the entire EU population.
Of the total number of vaccines for which contracts have been concluded, Bulgaria will receive a proportionate share based on its population, which is 1.55% of all doses.
In this way, we will provide practically more than 12 million doses, which under the two-dose immunization regimen would cover the entire population. Whether this will be necessary is difficult to say at this stage, probably not 100% as such a high coverage rate is difficult to achieve and will be rescheduled over time.
It will start with one of the logistically most difficult vaccines, Pfizer and Biontech. With this -70 degree storage requirement, the relevant infrastructure had to be built very urgently.
So far, we have provided the opportunity to find the vaccine with freezers that have already been delivered, installed and operated – in the state company “Bul Bio”, NCIPD, RHI – Sofia, RHI – Burgas, MMA, Pirogov. In addition, we will install a freezer at RHI – Veliko Tarnovo. Even with just the Bull Bio base, we can receive, store and hold the first delivery of 125,000 doses, which is for about 60,000 people. “
Associate Professor Kunchev also revealed how the vaccination itself will be carried out:
“We are clarifying this at the moment because the possibilities are quite different. Where we have a large concentration of hospitals like in Sofia, at the district level, outpatient doctors, including general practitioners and pharmacists, can enroll and be referred to the In other cities , the approach will probably be different.
It all depends on the number of subscribers to be able to make a fair distribution and give these people the protection they so badly need.
It is not necessary, time consuming, and expensive to supply almost all general practitioners with a freezer that maintains -70 degrees. If in every RHI regional center we have such a freezer, and this will happen somewhere on December 15-20, it is a sufficient base from which the vaccine can be distributed.
The Pfizer and Biontech vaccine has 5 days in which it can be stored in normal refrigeration conditions with a temperature of 5 to 8 degrees, and can be used on these days.
Then come the five most classic vaccines that we know of and that require a normal temperature between 2 and 8 degrees. In my opinion, they will be used mainly by the majority of the population. ”
