The head of the department and head of the pediatric clinic of the Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Assistant Professor Atanas Mangarov, told BNR that Facebook had downloaded his post, stating that masks were not the way to deal with the spread of the coronavirus. More than 70.6% of coronavirus patients wore masks, and only 3.9% did not, he wrote on his Facebook profile, citing data from the American Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (CDC). I am attaching a link to the study. The associate professor’s complaint comes on the day when expert councils in epidemiology and infectious diseases discuss whether the wearing of masks in the open should be mandatory again in Bulgaria.

“These are scientific facts and it is absurd to censor them in this way. Will Facebook control our lives,” Mangarov said. Explain that as of March 2020, in all previous epidemics: swine flu, bird flu, Hong Kong flu, never the World Health Organization, the American Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (CDC) or any of the other institutes. He said the masks worked a bit. “All of a sudden they got an idea and said if people wear a mask, the number of patients will drop by 80 percent, which is absurd,” he added.

According to him, masks are not the way to deal with an airborne infection. He explained that the prevalence of COVID-19 is no different than that of all other coronaviruses, which are responsible for around 15-20 percent of all respiratory infections – runny nose and cough during the cold months of the year. Therefore, the use of a mask does not contribute significantly to the non-spread of this particular virus and all respiratory viruses.

“People who feel fine and have no symptoms should continue to live normally. Those with mild symptoms should stay home. The really sick can be hospitalized. Now anyone who tests positive runs to the hospital.” because it is constantly said that the sooner you enter a hospital, the better your chances of survival. However, this leads to overcrowding of hospitals and doctors and nurses start to get sicker and sicker, “said Prof. Asoc. Mangarov.

However, several posts appeared on Facebook, indicating that the associate professor takes the numbers out of context and misinterprets you. More information about the reaction of the social network is given. “The 70% cited by Mangarov is actually just 108 people. CDC data covers only the period from July 1 to July 28. Facebook warned in Mangarov’s post:” Independent fact-checkers say this information has no context and can mislead people ”, is one of the statements.

“Some infectious disease specialists should stop talking about statistics. The fact that 70% of those infected have always used a mask does not mean anything. The question is how many percent of those who always wear a mask are infected compared to those who they don’t use it. ” says in another post.
