Armenia said Turkey had shot down its Su-25 fighter jet and accused Ankara of meddling in the fighting between Azerbaijan and pro-Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh, TASS and AFP reported.

“An Armenian Su-25 aircraft, which was carrying out a combat mission, was shot down by a Turkish F-16, which was in Azerbaijani territory. The pilot was heroically killed. The Turkish combat aircraft was 60 km inland in the Azerbaijani territory at an altitude of 8,200 m, “said Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan on Facebook, BTA reported.

An Armenian official’s statement that Turkey shot down an Armenian warplane is “absolutely false,” said the communications director for the Turkish presidency, Fahrettin Altun, Reuters reported.

“Instead of resorting to cheap propaganda tricks, Armenia should withdraw from its occupied territories,” Altun said.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry also denied that a Turkish fighter plane shot down an Armenian plane.
