This was explained in the “Wake up” program at NOVA by Associate Professor Dr. Alexander Oscar, Head of the Ophthalmology Clinic at “Alexandrovska Hospital” and Doctor of the Year.
The infection can enter our body through the eyes, but it mainly enters through the mouth, explained Dr. Oscar. “One of the clinical manifestations of COVID can be conjunctivitis, but early on, before other clinical symptoms develop,” explained Dr. Oscar. He advised people to be careful not to touch their eyes.
Hand sanitizers should not be overdone. If we touch our eyes with our hands freshly sprayed with disinfectant and feel a burning sensation, we must wash them thoroughly with water. “If that doesn’t help, you should see a specialist, because it can cause chemical burns to your eyes,” explained Dr. Oscar.
He warned that COVID-19 was a serious illness, but we had to learn to live with it. Dr. Oscar does not expect a vaccine before the summer of 2021.
