They increase the starting price of taxis two to three times. This provides for an amendment to the Ordinance on taxi transport of the Ministry of Transport. The project has been published for public discussion and will go into effect early next year.
The increase of the industry has been in demand for a year. One of the main reasons is the short courses, which were a lot of the job of taxi drivers, but are not as profitable.
“We can barely pay our lease … how to collect them with those 70 stotinki, there is depreciation of the car, fuel.” we currently drive cheaper than public transport, ”says Dimitar.
“Everyone would like to drive only long-distance routes and not drive in the city,” said his colleague Diyan Yonkov.
Are passengers and taxi drivers protected?
If the changes are accepted, the initial price before the meter starts working can be two to three times the minimum rate per km in the settlement. In Sofia it is 77 stotinki per km during the day and 88 stotinki at night. Therefore, if we take a taxi in the capital, the bill can start at a minimum of BGN 1.54 in the light and BGN 1.76 in the dark. However, those who get into the yellow cars do not accept the increase.
“We do not agree, gasoline prices do not rise, for what reasons. And we want higher wages, but nobody gives them to us. “I have children in Ovcha Kupel, to whom I sometimes go by taxi and I am not absolutely satisfied with the salary we receive,” Trayana is categorical.
“It is not normal and it is not okay, people are impoverished and sick and it is not okay to get up,” said Dochka.
Mass bankruptcies threaten taxi companies over state of emergency
The branch organization of taxi drivers says that most of them in the capital will meet the lower threshold of the increase.
“Almost all carriers fear unfair competition and will most likely make the initial fee double the price set by the municipality of Sofia. I don’t think customers make an output of about 84 stotinki per course, this is exactly what will happen in Sofia, “says Spas Atanasov, president of the Branch Taxi Chamber.
In the context of the whole country, the largest increase is expected in Varna, due to the higher minimum tariffs.
“The promise of the industry is that the short courses will not be abandoned, we will see if they follow,” said Boyko Ranovski of the Automobile Administration.
The ordinance also establishes a limit for the price of extra-urban transport. If all goes according to plan, the changes will take effect early next year.
