Among the top 2% of the world's best scientists are 12 professors from the University of Sofia.

According to the Stanford University ranking, twelve scientists from Sofia’s St. Kliment Ohridski University are among the top two percent of the world’s best scientists, the university said.

The ranking groups all researchers in 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields. It is compiled on the basis of a complex analysis, including information on the number of citations, H-index (a number by which both the productivity and the importance of the publications made by a certain scientist are evaluated – edition note), corrected in co-authorship Hm-index, citations of articles in different positions of authorship and others.

The ranking includes the names of scientists from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and other Bulgarian universities. Bulgarian researchers come from different fields of science and occupy a leading position in the American University ranking in competition with millions of their colleagues from around the world.

Prominent scientists from the University of Sofia are:

Prof. Nikolai Vitanov, scientist, physicist and mathematician, doctor in physics, mathematics and natural sciences at the Institute of Mechanics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, mathematician at the National Operational Headquarters to Combat Coronavirus.

Prof. Ivan Hristov, Professor of History of Philosophy (Christian Philosophy) in the Department of Historical and Systematic Theology of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Prof. Valentin Popov – Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Prof. Stoycho Yazadzhiev – Professor of the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Sofia
“St. Kliment Ohridski”

Prof. Georgi Vaysilov – Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Sofia.

Prof. Nikolai Denkov – Physicochemist, Professor at the University of Sofia and Doctor in Chemical Sciences. From January 27, 2017 to May 4, 2017 he was Minister of Education and Science in the interim government of Ognyan Gerdjikov.

Prof. Dimitar Tsalev – Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Sofia “St. Kl. Ohridski”.

Prof. Petar Kralchevski (1956-2020) – physiochemist, professor of analytical chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Prof. Dr. Ivo Grabčev – Head of the Department “Chemistry and Biochemistry, Physiology and Pathophysiology” of the University of Sofia.

Prof. Krassimir Danov – Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Sofia, winner of the Pythagoras Prize for his general contribution to the development of science in 2019.

Prof. Ivan T. Ivanov – Professor at the Department of Statistics and Econometrics at the University of Sofia.
