GERB-UDF MEP Alexander Yordanov called BNR journalist and presenter Silvia Velikov a “neighborhood gossip”. Subsequently, the editorial board of the national radio came out with a position against the words of the MEP.
This came after he gave an interview to Velikova’s “Politically Incorrect” program the day before on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the UDF. The MEP was visibly irritated by the journalist’s questions and also preferred to have a monologue rather than a conversation.
Velikova tried to interrupt him several times to ask him something, but he kept speaking through her. “Now you can ask,” Yordanov said several times. The presenter continued to insist that participation be normal, with questions and answers. However, Yordanov had obviously decided otherwise.
“I gave an interview to an extremely rude journalist, which I regret. She repeated some landmarks like a broken gramophone. Her demeanor was that of a neighborhood gossip.Yordanov wrote on Facebook after his participation.
However, Velikova’s questions were not “dumb”. At first, he asked Yordanov if it was his own fault that today the UDF is just a memory, and this seriously irritated the MEP. “The UDF is not a memory. It is a political reality at this time,” he said, although sociologists did not even manage to capture the electoral weight of the party.
He also reminded Yordanov that in 2018 he called Boyko Borissov “prime minister mimicry.” She asked him if he still thought about it and the reason for the question was that since the European elections the UDF has been running with GERB.
Yordanov’s post addressed to Velikova stayed on Facebook for more than 16 hours, but she eventually deleted it. Meanwhile, the editorial board of “Horizon” expressed its support for the journalist after the insults she directed.
Horizon journalists don’t ask convenient questions and don’t work with “benchmarks.” We are loyal to our listeners, not to the strong of the day. Our style is bold and free journalism, and our only corrective is the truth. from dissatisfied with his interview in “Politically incorrect”, MEP Alexander Yordanov to discredit presenter Silvia Velikova. Unfortunately, he’s not the only one who wants convenient questions and PR monologues on the air. they must be obedient and short-sighted, we remind them that although in 111th place in terms of freedom of expression, Bulgarian journalism is the guardian of the public interest, and in our country it rarely coincides with the political one “, is indicated in the position of the editorial board.
Yordanov’s words directed at Velikova also drew serious criticism on social media.
“I was silent for a long time about the insults that came from Alexander Yordanov’s face. Personal scratches on me are not important, but when you allow yourself to disguise an active BNR journalist in front of Silvia Velikova it is too much. If you don’t want to, no! give an interview! Or If you want to train journalists and set guidelines, you don’t become an MEP, you become an editor, program director or whatever. In my 18 years of journalism, the only insolent politician who called me to fire a reporter, because “he did not like questions”, he was president of the National Assembly! Of course not, but his name surprisingly matches that of today’s oppressed MEP “ Arman Babikyan wrote to the MEP.
In October, the MEP called protesters against the government and Attorney General Ivan Geshev “simpletons” and “lumpens”.
