Bulgaria thanks the EC for this report, which reviews the application of the rule of law. The report is positive, objective and clearly describes the results obtained by the cooperation with the EC. This was stated by the Minister of Justice, Desislava Ahladova, in relation to the new report from the European Commission on the new mechanism for the rule of law, reports BNT.

The EC focuses on priority areas aimed at ensuring the rule of law in the EU, these areas coincide with the government’s priorities. The EC first welcomed the reform of anti-corruption legislation and institutional framework in Bulgaria, which led to better cooperation, Ahladova added.

The report explicitly states that a series of high-level investigations were launched earlier this year, with charges in some cases. The EC focused on the Bulgarian government’s efforts to fight corruption, the consolidated legislative framework and the activities of specialized structures, as well as the judiciary, which bear witness to the determination of Bulgarian institutions to fight corruption, he said. the Minister of Justice.

As a result of the good cooperation between the judiciary and the executive, various actions have been taken to prosecute a large number of people who hold high positions in the government for corruption crimes committed by them – these are ministers, vice ministers, parliamentarians, mayors of municipalities and regions. Ahladova said that these cases are being worked very actively with Germany and Italy.

The EC welcomes the work of the administrative courts and highlights that in recent years it has reduced the time to hear administrative cases. It points out that, as regards the duration of the proceedings before the Supreme Court of Cassation, Bulgaria is in one of the leading positions.

Regarding the powers and regulations of the Special Prosecutor, the opinion of the Venice Commission will be awaited on the bills presented by which the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Law of the Judicial Power are modified.

Work on changes to the Constitution will also await the opinion of the Venice Commission, Ahladova said.
