Following a scandal, parliament introduced the possibility of increasing overtime from 150 to 300 hours a year. 99 deputies voted in favor and 55 against.
This is a change in the Labor Code, with which overtime is doubled per year through a collective labor agreement. However, there is still the restriction that day overtime hours must be up to 30 hours per month and night hours up to 20. However, the period for the summary calculation of working hours, on which the payment of the hours depends overtime will be shorter, six to four months.
According to the BSP, the change is wild African lobbying and turning Bulgarians into slaves amid talks in European countries during a 4-day work week. GERB and MRF accused the socialists of populist interpretations and intimidation of the people.
The Speaker of Parliament, Tsveta Karayancheva from GERB, explained as an engineer who worked in production that production must be ready on a certain day and sometimes defects have to be removed and overtime required. In these cases, there should be a regulated possibility of more overtime.
According to the chairman of the parliament’s social commission, Hassan Ademov of the MRF, the problem is not with overtime, but with the fact that the salary is low. Violeta Jeleva of the BSP believes that the total calculation of working hours allows not paying overtime at all.
