Already in summer, the government reduced the rate to 9% for restaurants, but not including supplies. Now, due to stricter rules, the government agreed to ease the VAT.
In a pandemic, ordering food at home is the most common substitute for going out at night. Besides saving consumers, it is also saving the industry.
“Supplies are a vital part of the business in today’s complex situation. It may turn out that we rely solely on them to preserve this business and the people who are connected and employed in it,” said the consultant to organize deliveries. to a chain of restaurants, Angel Vassilev.
Tighten food supply controls
That is why the company sat down to negotiate with the government to reduce VAT on this service as well. GERB promised that the lowest rate would be at the end of next year and it will be voted through the VAT law.
“We believe this is an important measure, which on the one hand will guarantee the viability of this industry and is in the context of all anti-epidemic measures,” said GERB President of PG Daniela Daritkova.
Calculations show that the measure will cost the budget around BGN 15 million.
“Having said ‘A’ for the basic fee, we should also say ‘B’ for food supplies. It is precisely in such an anti-epidemic situation that it is much more important that people, instead of going to restaurants, can get her food at home, “said Menda Stoyanova, chairman of the National Assembly’s budget committee.
Evening time for restaurants and bars in Sofia
The lower tax will not affect the price of the dinner delivered at home. If we have paid BGN 10 for the pizza so far, now it will cost that much again.
“Changing VAT on food supplies will not reduce menu prices for customers. The products and labor invested by us are the same for consumption on site in the restaurant, as well as for deliveries to the customer’s home or office, ”added Vassilev.
Tax relief is only for establishments, but not for companies that mediate deliveries.
The changes to the tax law are expected to be discussed and voted on in plenary next week.
