“The biggest problem we are facing at the moment is related to front line doctors. All are tired, most are infected, and some are in intensive care. We need help. We see the solution in active participation. Hospital doctors work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for everyone. We will have meetings with the rectors of medical universities and we will discuss the possibility of sixth-year students helping and recognizing this as an internship. ”This was stated by the Minister of Health, Prof. Kostadin Angelov, during the weekly briefing of the health authorities on the development of the pandemic.

“I will urge the mayors of the municipalities where there is a serious shortage of specialist doctors to organize meetings and provide assistance from pre-hospital care doctors,” the minister added.

The Head of State Health Inspectors, Prof. Angel Kunchev, announced that Bulgaria ranks 9th in terms of mortality of COVID-19 patients in the European Union and 22nd in terms of morbidity. During the last 24 hours, a record number of deaths from coronavirus was recorded in Bulgaria: 29.

“It cannot be said that there is a territorial regularity in the spread of the virus. There are no significant changes in those hospitalized. The percentage of people with positive samples who need treatment is identical to last week,” added Prof. Asoc. Kunchev .

He stressed that there is a tendency to reduce the age of those infected.

Prof. Dr. Todor Kantardzhiev also commented on the speculations related to the large number of PCR tests carried out in recent days.

“We do more tests than some Balkan countries, but much less than the developed countries of the West. People who have never done laboratory diagnostics have a great platform and they repeat some things. When the diagnosis needs to be confirmed, it is made in a referral.” This is the standard. Most laws and regulations in this regard predate the coronavirus, “said the specialist.

“Someone sat down to calculate if so many tests could be done because a test took ten minutes. The test requires acceptance of the materials, extraction. Normally we work with 350-400 samples. We reached 600”, added the professor.

According to him, what could currently relieve the health system is to perform rapid antigen tests, for which a sample is taken from the nasopharynx or throat. They are priced at up to BGN 20. If they test positive, it means the test may be contagious.

“These tests are more suitable for schools and jeeps, kindergartens and ambulances,” said Professor Kantardzhiev.
