Another absurd case in our healthcare system. An elderly man died in hospital, and for two days no one informed his relatives, although they tried to find information about his condition. The case is Ruse. The 84-year-old’s granddaughter told NOVA that her grandfather died on Friday, November 27, and his family found out by accident on Sunday.
“When you take an elderly person to a hospital, it is like taking a living person to hell.” With these words, the granddaughter of the late Mikhail – Emilia Gateva, begins the story of the absurd event. A few days before entering the hospital, his grandfather had a high fever. After initial unsuccessful attempts to transport him by ambulance to a medical institution, his relatives still managed to provide him with medical care.
ABSURD IN PERNIK: Patients with disabilities and coronavirus abandoned in a cold corridor
“He was received at the Kanev Center in Ruse. From there in the first 3-4 days we had a relationship with him. He was adequate, even his temperature had dropped. The only thing we learned from him was that he went to the bathroom barefoot, without slippers, no socks, nothing. I don’t know how they left it, “says Emilia.
Due to the pandemic, visits to the hospital were banned and the elderly man’s family members repeatedly tried to call a doctor to find out what their loved one’s condition was.
“We called the nurses and the doctors. Nobody answered the doctors ‘phone. On the nurses’ phone, they answered super rudely, I have no words for them. We called them and they said they could not give information, we had to call a doctor They explained to us that he was not a priority, they had a more important job, accepting other people, “said Emilia.
Emilia’s mother, in addition to her father, had to take care of her husband, who was admitted to the same hospital. Meanwhile, the woman continued to search for information about her father. And so on until Sunday, October 29, when he hears the shocking news.
Another patient died in Plovdiv after visiting hospitals.
“For the first time, a doctor picks up his phone and says, ‘If nobody called you, he died two days ago.’ How is it possible that he died two days ago and we don’t know? If you hadn’t called, when would you have told us? “Even at the time of her death, my mother was in the hospital,” said the grieving granddaughter.
The family of the deceased pensioner did not file a complaint for what happened. Kanev University Hospital told NOVA that they sympathize with the relatives and have launched an internal investigation. The health institution indicated that they open telephone lines in the rooms, and at certain times of the day, the relatives of the patients can receive information about their condition.
