A tragedy of the magnitude of Hitrino’s was averted last night in the Borovo municipality in Ruse. First at NOVA we told them that there was a leak in one of the tanks of a train composition that transported propane-butane gas. Quick actions by firefighters prevented the accident.
The drilled tank at Hitrino was not operational
The train conductor noticed a strong smell of gasoline and hissing from the ninth tank. At his signal, shortly after 7 p.m. last night, police and firefighters rose to their feet. The area was cordoned off and, at the risk of his life, firefighter Svilen Rachev stopped the tap he was dropping. He had previously made sure that the catenary was turned off and the trains stopped.
“I did a visual inspection from a distance. As it was already dark, we looked around with a flashlight. I decided that I could get closer to the place where the leak was and then I took steps to stop the crane,” said Chief Inspector Svilen Rachev.
Routine technological inspection of the systems caused the tanker train to stop at Borovo station. According to Inspector Rachev, there was no intentional damage to the drain cock, it was developed with a half turn and the seals were intact.
“Maybe it’s a technical malfunction related to poor crane tightening. I don’t see any other reason,” said Inspector Ralchev.
TRIALS AFTER THE TRAGEDY IN KITRINO: What did the expertise show in court?
Due to a leak and because the station is in the center of the city, in less than an hour about 300 people had to be evacuated from neighboring residential buildings. City officials even jumped over fences to get the elderly out of their homes. The locals return home shortly before midnight.
“Every day they monitor tanks and trains. For me, people were ready for the call to be evacuated and they voluntarily abandoned everything and left with the teams we had created,” explained Borovo Mayor Valentin Panayotov.
There are dozens of residential houses located on the central boulevard “Bulgaria” in Borovo. The distance between the houses and the rails is less than 50 meters.
The evacuation was carried out without panic and with tranquility in the protected home, where eight people with mental retardation live. Explosion hazard was assessed in grade 9.
