A tourist died in the area of Zhaltets Peak in Stara Planina, and three other injured tourists were treated, announced the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC).

Around noon at the PSS 24-hour Central Post (CDP) a signal was received for a tourist injured in a fall in the Mlechniya Chal peak area. Three mountain rescuers from the area approached the victim, gave him first aid and escorted him to the parking lot.

Meanwhile, again through the CDP, a signal is received from a young woman who explains that her boyfriend has fallen down a gutter. The accident reoccurred along the cable run. A mountain rescuer from the Kalofer detachment, currently in the area, saw the girl and immediately began searching for the victim. He established his location, gave him first aid and escorted him to safety.

As he helps the two of them move down the road, he notices that two other tourists moving nearby suddenly disappear from his sight. He returns and discovers that one of them has fallen into a gutter. The second, in an attempt to help him, fell after him. The rescuer also gave them first aid, took measures to insulate them from the cold and began to take them one by one to the summer trail to Botev Peak. The group organized for transportation in the first case was redirected to the cable car. A second group of mountain rescuers was organized, joined by colleagues from the Lovech detachment. Subsequently, a third group set out to intercept and help transport the victims.

The three victims were taken to a medical center.

At approximately the same time in the afternoon, two tourists traveling from the Botev shelter to the Dobrila shelter suffered an accident. One of them slipped in the Zhaltets peak area and fell on the slope in a southerly direction for about 300 m, his death was established shortly after. The mountain rescuers are about to reach him and organize the transport of his body.

On January 1, 2021, two rescuers from the PSS detachment in Troyan, conducting a cable crossing from Kupata Peak in the direction of Botev Peak, responded to a signal for a tourist who fell while descending the same path. He immediately received first aid and was escorted to the parking lot in the Mazaneto area, from where he was transferred to a hospital.

The Mountain Rescue Service points out that the reason for all the accidents is the underestimation of the conditions in the winter mountains and more precisely the snow conditions, as well as the lack of adequate equipment, and clarifies that the victims were without cats or used unsuitable tourist conditions. cats.

PSS recommends that everyone take extra care when driving on snowy trails, start early and properly assess the weather and their own strength.
