The Pazardzhik District Court sentenced each of the three perpetrators of armed robbery at a company office in the city to 20 years in prison. Defendants Jemal Alikanov of Peshtera, Vasil Atanasov of Plovdiv and Argentine Fernando Castro must serve their sentences under a strict initial regime. During the investigation of the robbery and the testimony of the victims, it was established that there were four perpetrators, but the fourth was never identified and found.
On December 21, 2015, four masked men armed with pistols and a Kalashnikov assault rifle attacked the office of Spas Spasov, which is located in the Pazardzhik industrial zone, near the local train station. Under cover of darkness, the perpetrators first disarmed the property’s security guard, who was in the caravan by the company’s main gate.
After tying up the guard, the bandits attacked the office itself. At that time, the brothers Spas Spasov and Todor Nikolov dined with their wives, Spasov’s youngest daughter and grandson.
As soon as the invasion took place, the attackers demanded that the money available in the office be handed over to them, shouting: “This is an armed robbery. Give the money!”
The brothers put up fierce resistance to the attackers, knocking them to the ground, hitting them and shooting them in the limbs. He saved on one leg, and his brother on the leg and elbow.
According to forensic scientists, this eloquently said that the bandits were well informed in advance. They knew there was money in the office and were determined not to leave without loot, but they didn’t want to kill their victims.
The bandits found and seized BGN 23,000 from the purse of Spas Spasov’s wife, Katya. In addition, a large quantity of gold that the owner of the company, his wife and his brother carried with them is forcibly taken: huge gold chains, bracelets and rings. The total value of the money and gold stolen is BGN 66,714.
Before fleeing, the attackers collect and take their victims’ mobile phones so that they cannot quickly contact the police.
After the robbery, the attackers retreated in an unknown direction.
The felony signal was given around 9 pm After receiving it, the police blocked the main roads in Pazardzhik and the region. This turned out to be extremely important, because less than half an hour after the armed robbery, the police already knew who the alleged perpetrators were.
20 minutes after the robbery, a police patrol stopped at the entrance to Peshtera to search a Volkswagen Passat. There are actually four perpetrators in the car. The two of them in uniform want the ID cards of everyone in the car. They were voluntarily handed over, after which the driver abruptly started on dirty gasoline and the car disappeared into the night.
Despite the gang’s escape, the police already have the basic guidelines for solving the crime. A witness, Zhivko Ivanov, was also found, to whom the perpetrators told how they committed a robbery and asked to take them out of the country illegally, because his identity documents are with the police.
Operational teams begin searching for the bandits. Vasil Atanasov, a Plovdiv resident, was the first to be found and detained in Pazardzhik on December 30. During the interrogations he did not say a word about his accomplices.
Meanwhile, Fernando Castro and Jamal Alikanov rented an apartment in Plovdiv, where they took refuge. They were detained near her after a pre-arranged police operation.
During the investigation it became clear that the Argentine arrived in Bulgaria from Spain, where he lives, three days before the robbery with his girlfriend. I only knew Jamal, who works in Spain and was also coming home for the New Year holidays.
The weapons used in the crime were never found.
Nor was the stolen kg found. gold and money.
The trial against the three perpetrators began in 2017 and ended with convictions three years later.
In addition to the effective sentences, the accused must pay compensation to the victims. 110,000 BGN to Todor Nikolov and 113,000 BGN to Spas Spasov. His two wives have BGN 50,200 and BGN 77,918, respectively. The defendant must also pay the costs of the case in the amount of BGN 28,637.
The decision of the Pazardzhik District Court can be appealed to the Plovdiv Court of Appeal.
