The suspect admitted that he shot a Greek Orthodox priest in the French city of Lyon a week ago for personal reasons, the BBC reported.

The 40-year-old detainee told prosecutors that the priest had an affair with his wife.

Nikolaos Kakavekalis, 52, was shot twice with a short rifle outside his church on October 31. He spoke to police when he came out of a coma Wednesday.

The shooting comes just days after three people were killed in a knife attack in Nice. And it was initially thought that the attack in Lyon could have had similar motives to the Islamist terrorist attack.

The motive for the Lyon shooting was initially unclear and an investigation into the assassination attempt was launched.

The suspect, of Georgian origin, was arrested at his home on Friday.

According to local press, he admitted that he intended to kill the priest for his affair with his wife, a 35-year-old Russian woman.
